Our SAS Talk with Kim podcast is back in action, and we're kicking our 2019 run off by chatting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventories with my former colleague Mike Steinhoff at ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability. 

GHG Inventories are one of the services KLA provides to clients, and Mike, as ICLEI USA's Program Manager for Tools & Innovation, is one of the foremost experts on the topic. If you've ever been involved in a GHG inventory, you know they can feel a little bewildering or overwhelming or tedious.

But here's the thing you also know: they are important. This might be the one millionth time you've said or hear it, but it bears repeating, "You can't manage what you don't measure." 

So I connected with Mike recently to talk about the value of GHG inventories, how our measurement and analysis tools have evolved, and opportunities now and in the future for them to be more of a springboard for meaningful climate action.

More and more people are watching videos. Beyond entertainment, that’s how they want to consume information. It’s the key to educating and engaging.

A blog is an excellent way to keep website content fresh, drive people to your site, amplify your work and seed social media posts. Your local government doesn’t have a blog? The guidance below also applies if you have the opportunity to contribute an article to a local media outlet or similar.

Do you have lofty community outreach and engagement goals for your sustainability, climate action or similar initiatives in 2019? Lay the groundwork for your success by first strengthening your overall communications skills. A good place to start is with the written word, which these days means websites, blog posts, emails and social media. We at Kim Lundgren Associates, Inc. (KLA) believe in the power of good writing and have experience honing the craft -- and we want to share our insights with you, starting with writing tips for websites.

Before we know it, the holidays will be upon us. While this time is often filled with delicious meals, community, and a time to reflect, it can also be a challenging space of reckoning with family and friends who harbor varying social and political beliefs. From gun control to the midterm election results, there will be no shortage of hot topics as you gather with loved ones.

That means the topic of climate -- not just potatoes and pie -- could be on the table. As one news article said, “when it comes to global warming, America’s political climate may have changed more than the Earth’s over the past three decades.” That’s quite a lot of change.

We’re about to enter the holiday season which is marked in large part by the act of giving (and receiving) gifts. The holidays exacerbate an issue that we grapple with every season and every day: waste. 

Which makes it the right time to look at our consumption habits, the growing interest in "circular economy" principles, efforts to curb single-use plastics from your straw to the supply chain, and steps we -- in our homes, at work and school, and within local government -- can take.
